“In the late '80s when the World Bank and IMF were persuading countries like Nigeria to deregulate their commodity monopolies, we saw an opportunity to get into the business at that point and fill the breach created by the exit of the Commodity Boards in these producing countries.”

It’s been said that timing is everything. And that was certainly true in the case of Sunny Verghese. He happened to be in the right place at the right time, and as commodity markets were deregulating, he seized the opportunity to act as the bridge between developing countries where commodities were grown and the developed countries where they were consumed.

Right from the beginning, he played a vital role by living and working in a rural Nigerian village for three and a half years to set up the business and ensure the quality of the products and operations.

His ability to build a replicable and scalable model along with his team resulted in a business that grew by leaps and bounds across the globe, and that is where his relationship with DBS began.
